Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy (1976)
Alice in Wonderland, the naughty version. American Cutie Kristine DeBell is enough reason to enjoy this hilarious smut parody without any mental effort.
Lewis Carroll’s prim little dreamer tumbles into a horny ’70s Wonderland where every riddle is a double entendre and even Humpty Dumpty needs a helping hand.
Bud Townsend’s 1976 film—specifically IMDb title tt0074113—is far more than a familiar fairy tale with random sex pasted over it. Alice is now a shy young librarian who rebuffs her randy mechanic boyfriend William, partly because she has swallowed the old notion that anything pleasurable must be wicked. Left alone with Lewis Carroll’s book, she drifts into a dream and follows a wisecracking White Rabbit through a mirror. A “Drink Me” potion shrinks her but not her clothes, so she enters Wonderland stark naked and already learning that its rules are cheerfully stacked against modesty. After tumbling into the water and being rescued by a troupe of singing locals, she receives a barely-there new dress and continues her pursuit through woods populated by talking rocks, shameless creatures and characters who treat sexual appetite...
as common sense. Alice experiments with masturbation, encounters a Mad Hatter whose tea-party manners quickly disappear, and helps a fallen Humpty Dumpty recover more than his balance. She later meets Tweedledee and Tweedledum in a scene that pushes the film’s bawdy anything-goes philosophy into decidedly peculiar territory. Yet the story does have an arc: each episode chips away at Alice’s fear of her own desires, moving her from startled innocence toward amused participation. On the road to the King’s Ball she still scolds other lovers, but the King of Hearts challenges her to stop living by other people’s judgements and begins a more intimate lesson in self-confidence. Naturally, the Queen catches them and turns Alice’s remaining virginity into a criminal charge, leading to a gloriously daft trial, a sentence loaded with sexual wordplay and a royal court sliding toward complete carnal anarchy. Townsend shoots it as a cheeky musical comedy rather than a grimy stag film: the songs propel the encounters, the jokes arrive by the cartload, and the broad theatrical performances give everything the feel of an off-Broadway panto after the cast discovered aphrodisiacs. The pacing occasionally sags when the erotic set pieces interrupt the adventure, but the sheer sincerity is disarming. This silly little film genuinely wants Alice to find pleasure, confidence and freedom—and somehow its innocence survives all the naked bodies.
The picture belongs unmistakably to the mid-1970s Golden Age of adult cinema, when filmmakers still imagined an erotic feature could have 35mm photography, costumes, choreography, outdoor locations and a proper orchestral score. Shot largely in upstate New York, it begins in the tiny D. R. Evarts Library in Athens before transforming the Catskills into Wonderland. A private estate near Palenville, locally known as White’s Castle, supplies lawns, woods, old stonework and open-air spaces for the dance numbers; Kaaterskill Falls gives Alice’s watery tumble some real scenic beauty, while the grounds of Olana add a storybook mansion to the landscape. The result is sunny, green and agreeably handmade. Animal makeup looks greasy, costumes sometimes resemble community-theatre leftovers and the special effects are hardly Industrial Light & Magic, but that homespun shabbiness becomes part of the charm. The vibe is playful rather than sleazy: a psychedelic sex farce, woodland musical and naughty fairy-tale matinee rolled into one very peculiar package.
Kristine DeBell carries the whole romp with fresh-faced prettiness, wide-eyed comic timing and a naturally sweet presence that keeps Alice appealing even as her education becomes increasingly hands-on. She has the bright smile and wholesome brunette beauty of the girl next door, which makes the contrast between her prim opening scenes, revealing costume and growing sexual confidence especially effective. Her performance is not polished drama, but it is warm, game and surprisingly charming; she sings, dances and reacts to the lunacy around her without becoming just another anonymous body. How explicit the film gets depends heavily on the cut. The original single-X version is primarily softcore, with abundant nudity, masturbation, oral sex, lesbian play and simulated coupling presented through jokes and musical staging. The later XXX edition adds graphic close-ups and hardcore footage, but those inserts feel bolted on and often flatten the movie’s playful rhythm. For sheer erotic charm, the softer cut is the better date with Alice; the hardcore version simply shows more of what Wonderland was already talking about.
Alice dreams of the White Rabbit, whom she follows into Wonderland, where she begins to experiment with her unexplored sexuality.
