Espelho (2013) – Silent Short Film
Everyone in a relationship must watch this Beautiful 15 min Silent Short Film from Brazil, about how miscommunication & ego can destroy Love & Relationships.
A tired couple squares off in the bathroom while their reflections quietly demonstrate that love—and lust—may depend on which side of the mirror you inhabit.
Juliana Milheiro’s wordless 15-minute short turns an ordinary bathroom into a compact relationship laboratory. Babi Fernandes and Leonardo Corajo play a couple whose shared routine has lost its ease: small annoyances carry emotional weight, physical closeness no longer guarantees affection, and the room meant for private rituals becomes a stage for their growing disconnection. Then the mirror stops behaving itself. Without the couple noticing, their reflections separate from them and develop personalities—and a relationship—of their own. The clever part is not simply that these doubles come alive, but that they respond differently to precisely the same situations. Where the flesh-and-blood pair find irritation, awkwardness or another reason to withdraw, the reflected lovers discover humour, tenderness and opportunities to...
move closer. The story gradually becomes a silent comparison between love neglected and love actively enjoyed, with the mirror offering less of a supernatural threat than a cheeky romantic rebuke. Milheiro trusts framing, editing, music and body language instead of dialogue, allowing tiny gestures to expose years’ worth of emotional wear. It is playful in conception but faintly sad underneath: the reflected couple are not idealised strangers, but possible versions of the same man and woman, still capable of warmth if they would only stop treating intimacy like another household chore. As the contrast sharpens, the film heads toward a confrontation between the relationship that exists and the one that might have existed, wisely saving its final answer for the closing moments.
Made in early-2010s Brazil and staged almost entirely inside a domestic bathroom, the film has an intimate, slightly claustrophobic magical-realist vibe. The polished mirror effects create two emotional climates in one room: cold domestic fatigue on one side, mischievous romance on the other.
Babi Fernandes gives the female half of this silent duet a natural, physically expressive presence, shifting between weary familiarity and the warmer, more playful femininity of her reflected double. The bathroom setting supplies skin, privacy and a definite erotic charge, but this is sensual relationship cinema rather than hardcore fare—more teasing intimacy and bodily allure than graphic sex.
Espelho (meaning ‘Mirror’) is a Very Creative & Beautifully made short film (15 min) from Brazil about relationships, shot entirely in a bathroom, without any dialogues, directed by Juliana Milheiro.
Directed by Juliana Milheiro, starring Leonardo Corajo & Babi Fernandes, Espelho is a short story of a couple’s daily life, as seen from the other side of the mirror in their bathroom, which shows how minor conflicts in their relationship causing friction between them, reflect in their bathroom mirror, indicating the romance in their life is no longer what it used to.
Surreally, without them realizing it, their reflections in the mirror take on lives of their own and create a replica couple in an alternate reality…
And then the Interesting, Captivating, Mind-bending, Psychological ride begins.
Every little, often trivial, thing that causes conflicts between the couple on this side of the mirror, is played out on the other side, by the alternate couple, in a Funny, Loving & Romantic way (the way it should have been).
Leaving the viewer with the realization that all conflicts, all problems in a loving relationship, can be faced and resolved with a little Love, a little Playfulness & by not taking life too seriously 💚
A Simple yet High Impact message about looking at things differently within a relationship.
And yes, Babi Fernandes is a Spanish Hottie with a Delicious Booty and an Amazing Smile.
