Secretary (2002)
A mentally unstable secretary heals her scars and blooms as a real woman by submitting to her kinky lawyer boss who spanks her into shape.
You sit down for this one thinking it’s just some oddball indie flick about kinky office sex, but it crawls under your skin and stays there. Lee Holloway comes out of the hospital after a bad stretch of cutting herself, dumped back into a family that’s a total mess – alcoholic father, constantly fighting mother, sister and new husband parked in the backyard pool house. She actually likes the mind-numbing grind of typing so she trains up and lands a job with this eccentric attorney, E. Edward Grey, who still runs his office on typewriters because computers are the devil. She’s overqualified but she wants the dull work. He notices every little mistake and it clearly gets him going, her standing there so eager to please. Then he clocks the self-harm and flat-out orders her never to do it again. Next typing error and he’s got her bent over the desk...
for a proper spanking. Instead of freaking out she gets off on it. That’s the moment they both lean in. They build this whole dominant-submissive thing around spankings, commands, her making errors on purpose just to feel his hand. She’s coming alive for the first time, feeling wanted and needed in a way that vanilla never gave her. Meanwhile she’s still trying the normal route with this sweet but clueless guy Peter from her old life; their sex is limp and he has no idea why she’d want to get smacked. Grey starts getting in his own head, ashamed of what he likes, and after she sends him a little worm in an envelope he takes it to the next level – skirt and underwear off, him finishing on her clothes – then fires her in a panic. She almost takes the easy way out with a proposal from Peter. But you watch this girl transform from hunched-over wreck into someone who knows exactly where she belongs, not out in the world proving some point but serving the man who sees her, controls her, and makes her feel complete. Steven Shainberg didn’t want the usual grim take on this stuff. He set out to show BDSM as something that can actually free people and feel natural, like those films that made other kinds of love look ordinary. The office is all real wood, plants growing, this living breathing space against the fake plastic sheeting and manufactured colors of her home life. Angelo Badalamenti’s score floats over it all, giving even the kinkiest moments this slightly dreamy, almost fairy-tale feel. Maggie Gyllenhaal just owns it, turning every awkward shuffle and wide-eyed look into something magnetic as she settles into her role. Spader is the perfect stiff, repressed match who slowly lets the walls down. It works because it feels honest: a woman doesn’t always need to be independent and in charge to be happy. Sometimes she needs a man who will take the lead, correct her when she needs it, and let her be the feminine, submissive partner she was meant to be. Two damaged people fitting together instead of tearing each other down. That’s what got me.
This is early-2000s American independent cinema, that window after Sundance when they still took real swings on stories that didn’t fit the usual mold. It’s set in suburban Florida – small-town houses, humid air, everyday American sprawl – but they shot it all around Los Angeles, turning an old brick power substation into Grey’s office, that industrial building transformed into this lush, plant-filled wooden sanctuary. Her family house got the plastic-sheeting treatment on purpose so it would feel artificial next to the organic, alive space where she actually thrives. The vibe is off-kilter and surprisingly gentle for how kinky it gets – more warm and quirky than dark, with humor in the awkwardness and real heart underneath the power play. You’re in for a slow-burn mix of erotic tension, oddball comedy, and genuine feeling that leaves you thinking about what actually makes two people fit, long after the credits.
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Lee is the reason this one works. She’s got that pale, slender, slightly off-kilter prettiness, big expressive eyes, and a body that starts out closed-off and damaged but opens up as she leans into being his girl. Her acting is fearless – you see every flinch turn into pleasure, every lost look become devotion. The allure is in that vulnerability mixed with the quiet confidence she gains once she knows her place. The film isn’t shy about showing it: her bent over the desk taking those spankings with clothes coming off, him marking her, then her slipping into a stall right after to touch herself thinking about him. It’s R-rated and erotic enough to get your attention without turning into cheap porn – suggestive, emotional, and focused on the exchange rather than just bodies. She makes the whole submissive journey feel right and beautiful.
A Brilliantly Made Erotic Film about a mentally unstable young woman Lee, with a history of self-harm, who finds her Calling, Heals from her Traumas & Blooms as a Woman, in her Submission to her Dominant boss & in Getting Spanked.
Lee Holloway (an Unforgettable Brilliant Performance by American Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal) is an introvert young woman with a history of self-harm, she cuts or burns herself to cope with Stress.
When she gets out of an institution, after a serious self-inflicted injury, she finds a job as a Secretary at a Law firm owned by Edward Grey (James Spader). She’s a Natural Submissive and he is a Dominant.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lee is drawn into Submission by the Pained Authoritarian personality of Edward and falls in Love with him. When she has her First Spanking experience, she is Transformed.
She experiences True Happiness and is able to give up her Psycho-pathological behaviour of self-harm, burying her blades and tincture iodine, that she used to carry everywhere, down a river.
She also becomes Obsessed with Edward and tries everything she can, to try to get him to Spank her again and again, Seducing him in her awkward ways, making deliberate mistakes so he would get angry and spank her…
But she gets frustrated, and even more obsessed, by his indifference.
Towards the end of the movie, after many turbulent and intense experiences, she manages to get him and they get married and she Lives & Gets Spanked Happily Ever After!!
Maggie Gyllenhaal is not Beautiful in any conventional, super-model, hot-actress way, BUT in this film she has proven beyond doubt that Beauty and Hotness have No Steroetypes.
She is HOT as Fires of Desire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and has delivered an Incredibly Convincing and Beautiful performance as the fumbling, awkward, unkempt girl, who VISIBLY becomes Hotter and an Absolutely Desirable Woman when she is ‘Treated Right’ by a man who she is in Love with.
You can literally SEE her gaining that Sexy Glow as a ‘Woman in Love’ would.
These 37 minutes JUICED Highlights, out of the original 1:47 hours film, includes the Juiciest parts of the film… Enjoy!! 🔥🔥🍷🍷✨✨
